Article from: PCI West Precast Perspectives Winter 2015 Edition

An Italian Renaissance Architectural Style has been a constant design theme for many years on the campus of the University of Southern California. Many of the buildings throughout the campus incorporate a Romanesque design that has been achieved with Architectural Precast. This design often brings together the materials of brick and pre-fabricated precast elements for their facades. The intricate precast shapes are best suited for the controlled fabrication environment of an experienced Architectural Precast manufacturer. The newly completed USC Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Building incorporated large architectural precast elements to accent and compliment this intricate brick project. Willis Construction worked to create as many large unitized pieces as possible to expedite the installation process. The larger pieces for the two story window surrounds, the main entrance, and the horizontal crowns at the 2nd and 5th floors were erected with a crane. One of the benefits of using larger precast pieces is that it contributes to a stronger water tight building. Some of the smaller pieces were delivered to the jobsite for the masonry trade to install. Previous Willis Construction projects on the USC campus utilizing this same design include the recently completed USC Student Health Center and the USC Parkside International Residential College. All three of these projects are great examples of how Architectural Precast can meet a designer's historical design choice. All three of these projects can be seen on this website.
